Double win for Lough Conn Lakers boys basketball

There was great excitement as Crossmolina’s Lough Conn Lakers (U-14 and U-12) hosted Ballina Braves in U-14 and U-12 league double-header in Gortnor Abbey on October 29th.

With the U-14 boys first to play, the action got off to a great start for the local boys as Diarmuid Coggins opened the scoring with a free throw and added a 2-pointer seconds later. Marcus Maughan added 3 more points to open up a gap but Ballina responded with some lovely baskets. Diarmuid ended the quarter with another point for the Lakers leaving the scoreline 9-8.

Three great baskets from Diarmuid Fox and Jack Naughton (2) to five points from the Braves left Crossmolina 13-11 up at half time.

In a low-scoring third quarter the Braves pulled back the deficit to level scores 15-15 at the end of that quarter, the Lakers sole score coming from Darragh Syron. The tension was building around the gym and a nail-biting finish was surely to follow.

In a very scrappy final quarter, Diarmuid Coggins put in five free throws, with Diarmuid Fox and Eoin Noone adding two-pointers and Eoin Noone also adding a free-throw. Ballina equalled the effort with 10 points in the quarter to leave the scores tied as the final whistle went.

During the three minutes of extra time there was excitement aplenty, shots, frees, rebounds, interceptions, the crowd were as excited as the players – it had it all, nearly. The only thing missing were scores. Just as the final whistle sounded, referee Deirdre Beattie called a foul against the Lakers and, with time up, two free shots. Fortunately for the local boys, both went amiss. Still level at 25-25, another period of extra time was called.

Crossmolina’s outstanding player of the game, Diarmuid Coggins stepped into the breach and score a basket, following it up with two free shots to Ballina’s two points in the last three minutes, as the local boys took the honours in this great local derby.

This, surely, was a game that will stick in the memory for some time. All the local boys played well with three lads playing their first games: Max O’Boyle, Aidan Granaghan and Jack O’Shea.

Lough Conn Lakers: Eoin O’Boyle, Darragh Syron (2), Marcus Maughan (3), Diarmuid Fox (4), Jack Loftus, Jack Sharkey, Jack Naughton (4), Max O’Boyle, Diarmuid Coggins (13), Jack O’Shea, Aidan Granaghan, Shane Timmons, Eoin Noone (3).

Ballina scorers: T. Lavelle (5), R. Gallagher (4), B. Donohoe (4), B. Molloy (3), S Donohoe (3), L. Armstrong, S. Cronin, B. Bohan and L Thompson (2 each).

Next up, the Lough Conn Lakers U-12s took on the Braves charges. Kobe McDonald opened the scoring for the locals with Oisin Deane adding a basket in the first quarter. However, Ballina had the better of the opening period with six points, including two scores from Mark Cunningham.

The Lakers boys took over in the second quarter adding on eight unanswered points from Patrick O’Malley (2 baskets and a free throw), Aaron Coggins (1) and Dylan Flynn (2), leaving them 12-6 in the lead.

Two more baskets from Esmond Maughan and Kobe McDonald in the third quarter gave Crossmolina a 10-point lead going into the final period.

In a very tense final quarter, Ballina stepped up a couple of gears and charged back to three points, including four more from Mark Cunningham. However, the local boys held on tight and put up the barricades to deny victory to the Braves.

Lough Conn Lakers: Ronan Walsh, Aaron Coggins (1), Oisin Deane (2), Kobe McDonald (4), Patrick O’Malley (5), Esmond Maughan (2), Jack O’Reilly, Josh Moyles, Dylan Flynn, James O’Boyle, Shane Lynn.

Ballina scorers: Mark Cunningham (8), Brian Donohoe (3), Michael Sweeney (2).
