Two Out Of Three Aint

Lough Conn Lakers had a mixed day out in Gortnor Abbey Gym recently as the U-11 team were narrowly defeated by Ballintubber Bulls while the U-12 and U-14 teams worked out two good victories in their respective leagues.

The U-11s started badly, going down 4-0 in their first quarter. They levelled during the second period but faded out of play again leaving them 9-4 down at half time.

They were still five points adrift at the end of the third quarter but fought back well in the last period, just falling short at 19-17 at the final whistle.

All-in-all it was a good game and a great learning experience for the boys, with some great team-play at times.

Crossmolina: Jack O'Reilly, Gary Naughton, Tom Gough, Luke Williams, Dara Floyd, Nigel Woods, Ronan Sweeney, James Loftus, Darragh Duffy and Aaron Keane.

The Bulls U-12s got off to a flying start and had three points on the board before the Lakers got a start with a basket from Dillon Flynn. James O'Boyle followed with a basket and then two single points from the free-throw line. The Bulls added a basket before Dillon Flynn put in the Crossmolina boys last basket of the quarter, followed by two single points from Ballintubber, leaving the score 8-7.

In the second quarter, Patrick O'Malley scored the Lakers only basket while the Bulls restored parity with three points for the quarter, 10-10 at half-time.

Scores from Aaron Coggins and James O'Boyle were more than cancelled out in the third quarter as Ballintubber took a three-point lead into the final period.

The Lakers put on the pressure and pulled ahead with scores from Oisin Deane and Patrick O'Malley (two baskets each) to the Bulls single basket in the final quarter, giving the Crossmolina boys a three-point win.

Crossmolina: Gary Naughton, Ronan Walsh, Aaron Coggins (2), Oisin Deane (4), Kobe McDonald, Ronan Sweeney, Esmond Maughan, Patrick O'Malley (6), Josh Moyles, Dylan Flynn (4), James O'Boyle (6).

The Lakers U-14s got of to a roaring start outscoring the Bulls 8-2 in the first quarter with baskets from Diarmuid Coggins (2), Marcus Maughan and Eoin Fergus (playing in his first game).

The second quarter was a different ball game altogether as the Bulls pushed back with a dozen points to the Lakers seven, leaving a single point between the sides at the half. Crossmolina's scorers were Darragh Syron and Jack O'Shea (3 baskets).

It looked set for a tight second half but the Lakers took complete control scoring a massive 16 points and locking out the Bulls. Jack Loftus opened the scoring followed by two baskets from Eoin O'Boyle before Diarmuid Coggins put in the remaining five baskets of the quarter.

Diarmuid Coggins scored the Lakers two baskets of the final quarter as the Bulls managed a single two-pointer in the final period giving the Lakers a 19 points margin at the final whistle.

This was another great display from the Lakers which gives them four wins from four games. They will be in action again soon with a Cup quarter-final in the offing against Cispeil Iorrais. Good luck lads.
