Celebrating Christmas 2020

We must remind ourselves that the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday’s and Holy Days remains suspended during the pandemic. In particular, the vulnerable should be encouraged to stay at home and participate in Mass via webcam.

Christmas is about more than just one day.  Families are welcome to attend Mass at some point during the twelve days from Christmas Eve to Epiphany. Christmas Masses will also be widely available over webcam and we strongly encourage families to “tune in” from their homes with a lighted candle. If you decide to come to Mass at Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, please note:

1. Attendance at Mass for Christmas will be on a first come basis.  Follow the guidelines from the Stewards. Once we have reached capacity, people will be asked to sit in their cars.

2. People will not be allowed stand in porch or by the walls.

3. Families or 3 people to every second seat.

4. Please sit & stand, do not use kneelers.

5. You are not allowed to gather in groups after Mass

6. Communion distributed at the end on Mass.,

8. Help needed after all Masses in Sanitising seats.

We decided ‘right or wrong’ not to go with tickets, perhaps this way we avoid disappointing many regular and faithful parishioners.

The stewards who help us so generously did not make the rules so please be patient, kind and understanding.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Our sincere Thanks

The year 2020 will be a year we will all want to forget. This pandemic has presented us all with many challenges. The familiar pattern of community and family support has been affected. Limitations have been imposed on us and our entire way of life has been turned upside down. What kind of Christmas will 2020 be? It will be different but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be special. Many people have decided not to focus on presents and the lavishness that Christmas brings but to celebrate it in the true spirit of the Christ Child. In some ways the Covid-19 restrictions can open up greater opportunities for prayer and for reflection, for family time and space to enter into the true meaning of Christmas. This Christmas it is not possible to thank people individually. So many volunteers became involved in planning, preparing, cleaning and sanitising our churches so that they would be safe secure places for public worship. So many has helped in all areas of parish life & community. We thank you all sincerely. The Irish Bishops said recently “It is a clear illustration that  religious faith is not just about believing but also about belonging in a local community, that significant network of relationships which indicates that people are there for each other.

We wish you every blessing for your health and happiness, stay safe and look after one another. Have a very happy Christmas.  Fr Francis & Fr Gabriel.

Covid 19 and Christmas Masses

We must remind ourselves that the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days remains suspended during the pandemic. Families could be encouraged to pick a particular day on which, as a family, they may go to Mass. We are particularly conscious of those whose livelihoods have been seriously threatened by the pandemic.  We keep in mind those for whom Christmas time may bring feelings of sadness – people coping with bereavement, families that cannot be together, those in care homes who can only have limited visits from their loved ones.  Christmas can be difficult for Irish emigrants and migrants living in Ireland, who are unable to travel home. It must however be understood within the wider imperative of reducing gatherings to what is essential

Mayo V Tipperary

This historic pairing one Hundred years after their counter at the semi-final stage in 1920 semi final which was not played until on May 7 1922 at Croke Park when Tipperary emerged winners by 1 – 5 to 1 – 0 Tipperary went on to defeat Dublin the final after they had overcome Cavan 3 – 6 to 1 – 3 in the other semi-final at Navan. At the start of the year not many thought their would be any football with Covid 19 and all the uncertainty with lockdown no spectators allowed into games and what a championship we have had brilliant well contested games surprises. Next Sunday Mayo will journey to Croke park to all-Ireland Semi-final like no other, no spectators but with the same goal in mind. With both teams playing the same style of football this can be a classic. We wish the local Deel-Rovers lads Conor Loftus, Jordan Flynn and Ciaran McDonald the best of good luck and all associated with team you have done us proud.

SHOE BOX APPEAL.

A shoebox collection for the children that reside in the direct provision Centre in Ballyhaunis. There are currently 113 children living in the centre; 66 boys and 57 girls. These children’s lives are compounded by uncertainty, poverty, fear and exclusion. With Christmas looming, I think it would be a very kind gesture to let them know that they are supported. It will really put a smile on their faces, after what has been an especially difficult year.  We are not asking for people to spend a lot of money, maybe you can reuse items that have been left idle in your home! Whether it be a teddy, toys, dried snacks, crayons and a colouring book, blankets, footballs, hygiene products, sensory toys etc, be creative!  N.B *Please state on box whether your item is intended for a male / female & age group your box is intended for.*Age groups: newborns-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-18.   If you are interested in donating boxes, contact us here at Ballina FRC Abbey Street Ardnaree 09675573. Wild Mountain Accents

There was a lot of online reaction to the official trailer of Wild Mountain Thyme which was released last week, to be fair, Irish accents are hard. But Nephin and the countryside around Crossmolina Parish looks great. Billy Connor and Eamon Moore took to the airwaves on the Joe Duffy show to give a more balanced side to the discussion. The film is due for release in the USA on Dec 11th and on demand, there is no Irish release date yet due months and months of the cinemas being closed.

A Message from Pope Francis.

“We must be very attentive to the     prescriptions of the authorities, both the political authorities and health     authorities, in order to protect ourselves against this pandemic. Let us offer to the Lord this distance between us, for the good of all, and let us think, let us think a lot about the sick, about those who are already marginalized when they enter the hospitals; let us think about the doctors, the nurses, the volunteers, the many people who work with the sick at this time: they risk their life but they do so out of love for their neighbour, as a vocation. Let us pray for them. “Pope Francis

November, Remembering our Dead.

During this month as we recall with love the memories of dear ones who have gone before us, we ask the   living God to grace us with an awareness of how blessed we are:

Blessed with their wisdom that guided us

Blessed with their courage that lifted us

Blessed with their generosity that filled us

Blessed with their love that formed us.

Gracious God may we in turn not be slow to share the blessings we have received and may we live confidently trusting that in you, life is changed and never taken away.

Remember Lord, those who have died and have gone before us, marked with the sign of faith, and especially those for whom we now pray. May these and all who sleep in Christ, find in your presence light happiness and peace
