Lent 2021

Christians who keep Lent commonly make a dedication to fast, or to give up something, like smoking, watching TV, social media, or a food or drink, such as sweets, chocolate, or coffee. Some Christians also take on a Lenten observance, like reading the Bible and spending more time in prayer to draw nearer to God. “Lent’ is a shortened version of the Old English word ‘lencten’, a word which simply means spring (in relation to the season). It is thought to have Germanic roots and seems likely to have been used to describe the season when the days began to lengthen, signifying new life and renewal. Over time, the word Lent came to be linked specifically to the Christian tradition of fasting before Easter, which always coincided with the spring.

Finding New Ways of Praying at Home

The restrictions in place because of Covid-19 mean that as a Christian Community we cannot gather for our usual religious services. This situation challenges us to find new ways of reflecting on our faith and praying in our homes as the “Domestic Church”. . One way of doing this is to set up a prayer space in a prominent place in your home. There, each day, you can place different symbols or things of meaning to you and your family. You can light a candle, read from your Bulletin or a Bible, the Word of God to enrich us our Lives.

Lent and Covid 19

Covid-19 has given the opportunity for some of us to re-evaluate our lives: to consider our priorities and consider what God is doing. Why not spend lockdown being locked into something that will enable you to discover what God is doing in your life? Lent is a season during which we reflect on our personal relationship with God and on every Christian’s responsibility to engage with the world as it is. Lent begins each year on Ash Wednesday, 46 days before Easter Sunday. This year Lent will start on February 17th, 2021; and if you are following the 40 days tradition, Lent will then end on Holy Saturday, April 3rd, 2021. Lent can be helpful for families, in the same way, that Advent helps parents prepare their children for Christmas. The season of Lent provides an opportunity for families to strengthen spiritual discipline together. Rather than engaging in the distraction of the baskets and egg hunts, Lent can help your family focus on the real meaning of Easter and what Jesus’ sacrifice means for our salvation.

Lent is the Christian season of spiritual discipline leading up to Easter. Throughout Lent, most Christians adopt a period of fasting, repentance, prudence, and spiritual development.

• Join us for online Masses from St. Tiernan’s.

• Pick up your aches and a pouch with  a prayer card on Ash Wednesday from St Tiernan’s Church.

• Light a candle and pray at home with your family.

World Day of Sick.

February 11 is World Day of the Sick, an observation started by Pope John Paul II as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. The day coincides with the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. People around the world take the time to pray for the sick and for those who work very hard to alleviate the sufferings of the sick on this day. Faith organisations mark this day especially to provide the sick with medicines, food, and spiritual guidance. Pope John Paul II initiated the day in 1992 to encourage people to pray for those who suffer from illness and for their caregivers. Join us on Thursday at 10am for Mass from Crossmolina Church.
